Custom Made Bathroom Vanities in Australia: What to Know Before You Order

Choosing The Right Size And Layout

A vanity sets the tone for the whole bathroom. It is the centrepiece, the talking point, and the first thing people notice when they enter your bathroom. Sometimes off-the-shelf options don’t fit into awkward corners or non-standard bathroom shapes, or ensuites which have been squeezed between bedrooms and wardrobes. This is where custom made vanity units come into play.

The team from RF Bathroom & Kitchen Products have put together this guide to help you understand how to get a vanity built to your exact measurements, in a finish, size and shape that you want.

We’ll help you understand what questions to ask, what you need to know, so you can go into the process of building a custom vanity with confidence.

What Makes a Vanity “Custom Made”?

Custom made basically means built from scratch, something that is designed and created to specifically fit your space and your design tastes. You are able to choose every detail such as size, doors & or drawers, height, basin or vanity top, cabinet & benchtop finishes to suit your design and plumbing requirements. You can modify one of our existing designs or start from scratch!

Custom Made Bathroom Vanities

Perfect Sizing

You can make the vanity fit your bathroom, not the other way around. Wherever you want the vanity to fit, we can craft the vanity to fit just right.

Layout Control

You have the ability to have one, two, or even three basins in your vanity. You have the choice of tapware, the number of drawers and under-sink storage, so much creativity is in your hands.

Layout Control

Building Materials

All of our vanities use Australian made Highly Moisture Resistant Board with your choice of finish in 2 Pack paint, melamine from trusted brands Polytec & Laminex or the warmth and texture of real Timber Veneer.

The Height You Want

You can have the vanity however high you want. If you are a particularly tall family, then you can have a taller vanity and mirror.

Plumbing Considerations

Your vanity can be designed to accommodate your plumbing requirements with drawer cut outs and spaces behind drawers as required.

Choosing the Right Size and Layout

Choosing The Right Size And Layout

Having a blank canvas to design your bathroom and customise your vanity is great, but there are some guidelines to consider. A big reason people choose to customise their vanities is because their bathrooms aren’t of a ‘standard’ size. This means choosing the right size vanity for the layout of your bathroom.

  • Choose the vanity width by room type. Are you fitting a vanity into an ensuite, standard bathroom or a large, master bathroom? That would mean a smaller vanity for the ensuite, such as 600mm wide, while for a master bathroom, you could have a vanity with dual basins, over 1800mm wide. Also, take into consideration the other items in the room to ensure access for doors , toilet, shower and bath are sufficient.
  • Depth and height. There are some comfortable heights for the vanity basins depending on how tall you are. You don’t want one too low so you’re bending down a lot, nor do you want one too high which can be awkward. For depth, if you have a slim ensuite then a slimmer depth vanity is preferable. For a wide bathroom, a deeper vanity can fill up some space and make the bathroom feel less empty.
  • Layout and clearance. If you have full control of the layout of your bathroom, then you have so many more customisation options for a custom made vanity. You can measure the space for the drawers to be fully out and the space for the door swing. You can have plenty of clear floor space in front of your vanity, and you can choose the type of vanity. A wall-hung vanity floats above the floor and gives the illusion of more space.

Cabinet Finishes and Materials

Choosing a moisture-resistant material for your vanity means you will have a piece of furniture that will last for years in a humid environment- the bathroom.

Wood for your vanity:

  • Moisture-Resistant (MR) Board: An engineered wood, which is wood fibres glued together, and treated with water-resistant resins. It is cost-effective, very flat, and stable.

Cabinet Finishes:

  • Decorative Laminates: Embossed, timber grain decorative finish from Polytec or Laminex. They are highly durable, budget-friendly, and come in realistic wood-grain textures.
  • Wood Veneer: Real timber, sliced finely and pressed onto a highly moisture resistant board. This is the most cost effective and sustainable way to incorporate real wood into any design project. Timber Veneer is 100% natural and so the pattern and grain aren’t altered in any way and because only a thin slice is used it is more environmentally friendly using less of a precious resource in contrast to solid timber. Timber Veneer will not expand and contract due to the variations in temperature or humidity in a bathroom environment.
  • 2Pac (Polyurethane): A sprayed paint finish that creates a smooth, durable, and seamless look. It is available in matte, satin, or high-gloss. The high-gloss option is great for reflecting light in small bathrooms for that illusion of more space.

Benchtop Options

You can choose the benchtop for your vanity. Choose from a fully moulded vanity top or bench tops in Solid Surface, silica free Caesarstone, solid timber or Corian match with the basin of your choice.
